Penetrable Sculpture

The pieces in the exhibition A Continuous Movement are neither sculpture nor relief, but something in between. Rather than shaping solid volumes, Benedicto makes "gestures in space" by using lines to denote direction and movement. Abstract networks of closely spaced metal rods and strips form light-penetrable surfaces, suspended from the walls or angled towards the viewer. The dimensions of the works become apparent through the superimposition of these see-through, screen-like fields, which create optical effects that become visible to viewers in motion.

— Bobby Benedicto

This piece consists of tensile, laser cut "screens" welded and stretched across oblique, mirror steel panels, creating interfences or waves with the forms' own reflections as a viewer shifts position and angle.

Elements of unpredictability lie beneath the restrained, precise manner in which the assemblages are cut and laid out. Some of the structures allow trembling, wayward movements; there are tensile forms pulled to forced lengths, containing impending contractions and expansions in the manner of helixes and springs. Fringe-like strips are cantilevered and suspended, their ends unfixed and moving.
